Your Visit at MediPaws

What to Know for Your Visit

Initiating a Consultation

Emergency visits: No consultation is needed in emergencies. If possible, call us to let us know you are on your way so we can be ready to see you as soon as possible.

Specialist consultations: We require a referral from your GP veterinarian. If you don’t have a local vet already, MediPaws can also help facilitate this if needed.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

We will get in touch with your regular vet before your appointment to obtain your pet’s medical history. If you have any additional information or paperwork at home, do feel free to bring it along. If your pet is taking any regular medication, please bring it to your appointment.

Pre-Consultation Feeding

Your pet should have access to water up until the morning of the consultation. However, please do not feed your pet breakfast on the day of the appointment. All food should be removed by 9 pm the evening before.

Diabetic patients: Fasting is typically NOT recommended. Please confirm with your veterinary team before the appointment as to what is recommended for your pet.

Frequent Questions

Do I need to bring any information to the appointment?

Your regular vet will usually send a copy of your pet’s clinical history, laboratory results and imaging studies via email before the consultation. Short videos on your phone can be useful if your pet’s illness is episodic. Please also bring any current medications your pet is receiving.

This depends on the individual case, and we will inform you when you make the appointment. As a general rule, most pets will need to fast after their evening meal the night before the appointment, as this allows us to proceed with same-day procedures if required. They can have access to water overnight.

If your pet is diabetic, very young, or having episodes of low blood glucose, fasting is generally NOT advisable. Please inform our team if this is the case for your pet, and we will come up with an individualised plan for your pet’s appointment.

A thorough history will be taken, followed by an examination of your pet. Special tests or examinations may be performed during the consultation. We will then discuss an appropriate diagnostic and treatment plan and provide you with an estimate of costs. If the decision is made to proceed with further procedures, we will ask you to sign an estimate/permission form, and we will admit your pet into hospital.

This depends on the procedure that will be undertaken. Specific details, including sedation/anaesthesia, will be discussed during the consultation. We will contact you by phone during or after your pet’s procedure to discuss results. We will also arrange a discharge appointment or an ongoing care plan for pets that need to stay in the hospital. On admission, we recommend that you provide us with a primary and secondary phone number so that we can reach you quickly if required.

You do not need to bring bedding or toys for your pet, as we have an excellent range of comfortable bedding. Feel free to bring any long-term medication your pet may be taking.
