Internal Medicine FAQs

What does an Internal Medicine Specialist do?

An Internal Medicine Specialist is a veterinarian who has completed additional training and qualifications in the diagnosis and management of complex internal diseases. These specialists possess in-depth knowledge across multiple organ systems and are experts in solving challenging or chronic medical cases.

Some examples of conditions for which your family veterinarian might refer your animal to an internal medicine specialist include:

  • Kidney and bladder disease
  • Urinary incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Pancreatic disease
  • Weight loss
  • Chronic vomiting and/or diarrhoea
  • Hormonal (endocrine) disease such as Cushing’s disease, complicated diabetes, thyroid issues or other issues
  • Liver disease
  • Coughing and breathing issues
  • Infectious diseases
  • Blood disorders
What diagnostic tests are typically performed in internal medicine?

This can vary depending on the suspected condition but may include:

  • Blood and urine testing
  • X-rays and ultrasound (with our diagnostic imaging specialists)
  • Fluoroscopy (live moving x-rays)
  • Blood pressure
  • Joint fluid collection
  • Bone marrow sampling
  • Endoscopy (video camera) to examine the inside of the gastrointestinal tract, airways and urogenital tract, with minimally invasive biopsies if needed
  • CT and MRI imaging (with our diagnostic imaging specialists)
  • Fine needle aspirates of organs (such as liver or spleen)
Once a diagnosis is established, our internal medicine specialists will work with you and your primary veterinarian to develop a personalised treatment and follow-up plan tailored to your pet’s unique needs.
