Assessing kidney injury in dogs undergoing knee surgery

Does your dog need knee surgery? Join our study on improving kidney protection during anaesthesia.

MediPaws is currently enrolling dogs undergoing Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery for cruciate (knee) disease in a clinical study investigating what happens to the kidneys under anaesthesia using a new urine biomarker called Cystatin B. This research may help improve how we protect dogs’ kidneys before, during, and after anaesthesia.

Why participate?

Helping dogs all over the world

Your dog will contribute to cutting edge veterinary research into the use of a new urine biomarker under anaesthesia.

Meaningful benefits for your dog

Dogs enrolled in the study will receive:

  • A free consultation with our specialist surgery team
  • Complimentary blood and urine testing, including advanced kidney biomarker analysis (valued at around $1,000)
  • Additional monitoring of kidney function before, during, and after anaesthesia
  • Copies of all test results for your records

Eligibility

Dogs may be eligible if they require a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) procedure and are otherwise well.

What’s involved?

What happens in the study?

Your dog will undergo their planned TPLO procedure as normal, with no changes to their standard care.

This study focuses on measuring additional kidney markers in blood and urine before surgery, after surgery, and at follow-up recheck appointments.

All urine samples are collected via a simple free-catch method, meaning there is no added discomfort or risk to your dog.

Participation requirements

There is no additional work required from you or your dog to take part in this study. All testing is performed alongside routine surgical and recheck appointments.

Participation is voluntary. You may choose to withdraw your dog from the study at any time and for any reason. Your dog’s health, comfort, and wellbeing will always remain our top priority.

Costs

There are no costs associated with being part of the study. Standard TPLO surgery fees apply, and any treatment unrelated to the study remains the responsibility of the owner.
