Urinary tract disease (from the kidneys to the bladder and beyond) includes disorders that can affect pets of almost any age and breed. At MediPaws, our Kidney & Urinary Medicine Centre combines specialist expertise, advanced in-house diagnostics and therapeutics to manage complex urinary tract disease.
The department is led by Dr Dennis Woerde, an internal medicine specialist with further specialized training in kidney and urinary disease. He recently received diplomate (specialist) status from the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ACVNU). He is the first person in Australia with this qualification.

We offer a range of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that can negate the need for open surgery in most cases. This includes urethroscopy and cystoscopy which allows for direct visualization of the urinary tract. This is often coupled with targeted biopsy sampling or concurrent treatment under the same procedure.
Where appropriate, this may include laser lithotripsy/fragmentation for selected conditions (e.g. ectopic ureters), as well as laser fragmentation to assist in the management of certain urinary calculi (stones) and relief of urinary obstructions.
Minimally invasive placement of ureteral or urethral stents is also performed.
True multidisciplinary, compassionate support: Urinary tract disease is often associated with other comorbidities. This service works closely with diagnostic imaging, surgery, oncology, and anaesthesia teams to ensure a thorough investigative and treatment approach, with coordinated decision-making at every stage of care.
We welcome referrals and work closely with general practice teams across Sydney and beyond, providing specialist input while keeping the GP–client relationship central to care.
Where appropriate, this collaborative approach allows follow-up care and ongoing monitoring to be performed by the referring veterinarian, ensuring continuity of care for both the patient and their family.
